My Xtreme Experience: A Day of Driving Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis, and Mustangs
My Father’s Day gift was speed. Four supercars, one track, zero speed limits. The family and I headed to Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington for an Xtreme Experience morning I won’t forget.
Ferrari 488 GTB: The Italian Legend
First time in a Ferrari. Ever. The 488 GTB delivered exactly what you’d expect - smooth power delivery, refined handling, undeniable prestige. Fun to drive? Absolutely. But it landed at #3 for the day.
The numbers: 680hp, 205mph top speed, 0-60 in 3.0 seconds
Porsche GT3 RS: German Engineering Perfection
I went in with high expectations thanks to Richard Hammond’s years of GT3 RS praise. It exceeded every one of them.
One word describes this car: “tight.” Tight steering, tight transmission, tight connection between driver and road. Everything responds instantly, everything feels precise. This is what a sports car should be. #2 for the day, and yes, I’d seriously consider owning one.
The numbers: 520hp, 199mph top speed, 0-60 in 3.3 seconds
Lamborghini Huracan: The Disappointment
First time in a Lamborghini. Hopefully the last.
My expectations were too high, and the Huracan failed to meet even moderate ones. Despite impressive specs on paper, it felt slower than everything else on track. The interior quality felt cheap, the driving experience felt artificial, and everything seemed designed for Instagram photos instead of actual performance.
Brutal honesty? I’d rather drive my Tesla Model 3 or our Acura MDX. Last place by a wide margin.
The numbers: 602hp, 202mph top speed, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds
Shelby GT500: The American Beast
The instructor’s warning during orientation said everything: “If you’re driving the GT500, be careful when you put your foot down. It has so much power, it can be unpredictable if you’re not prepared.”
This was the only car that got a safety warning. That should have been my first clue.
The GT500 was my absolute favorite. Not even close. Walking back to the car after the session, I told my wife we needed to buy one - and I’d even let her drive it. Lower top speed than the others? Doesn’t matter. This car had more usable power, felt faster on track, and sounded like a NASCAR engine had escaped captivity.
The roar from that supercharged V8 drowned out every other car on the track. Pure, unfiltered American muscle that made the European exotics feel civilized and boring.
The numbers: 760hp, 180mph top speed, 0-60 in 3.5 seconds
